Tony M. Andrews, M.D., Award and Lecture Program
Tony M. Andrews, MD (1935 – 1993), was Chief of Medicine at Emanuel Hospital and Health Center from 1975 to 1993. He was the Director of the Internal Medicine Training Program for more than 18 years. Dr. Andrews had the unusual distinction of having achieved great standing in the three distinct paths of medicine; research, teaching and patient care. He moved from a distinguished research career in the UK, to be a renowned teacher, with a special talent in the art of bedside teaching. His down-to-earth approach with students and house officers made him an effective and sought-after educator. Dr. Andrews had a deep love for medicine and medical education, and a zest for life that was reflected in his great success as a father, physician and teacher.
Each year, a graduating resident is selected by peers and junior housestaff for the Andrews Award for "excellence in observation, teaching and patient care at the bedside." The Award, supported by the Emanuel Foundation, acknowledges the tradition of exceptional bedside teaching that is fundamental to the program.
The Andrews Fund also supports an annual lecture program, which allows residents to interact and learn from leaders in the field of Endocrinology.
