Sample Individualized Educational Training Curriculum
Given the diverging paths in today’s Internal Medicine career choices, residents are now allowed to choose an outpatient or inpatient track for their 3rd year. This experience gives them greater familiarity with the setting in which they ultimately will be practicing.
The outpatient track has 4 months of outpatient experience, allowing the resident to focus on improving their outpatient and continuity practice skills. They also have 4 months of electives, which is usually spent at Legacy satellite clinics, and in outpatient-related subspecialties. Additional ward months or other electives are also options.
The inpatient track has 4 months of wards experience, and the outpatient clinic is reduced to ˝ day weekly. Residents have 3 months of elective, which is often spent serving as a “journeyman-hospitalist”, working directly with one of the hospitalist faculty. Electives designed to perfect procedural skills are also excellent options.
Residents heading toward subspecialty fellowships are counseled towards an appropriate track according to their subspecialty choice. Both tracks encourage the resident to develop skills, procedures, and attitudes specific to their career environment.
